Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to leveraging sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment, community development, and social impact in Lagos State.

The Governor made this known following a courtesy visit earlier in the day from the captain of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong, and later at the Troost-Ekong Foundation Charity Match held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

During the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu and Troost-Ekong discussed the future of Nigerian football and the role of sports in shaping the next generation. Troost-Ekong expressed his determination to lead the national team to victory at the upcoming AFCON 2025 and secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also outlining his long-term vision of giving back to society and supporting youth development.

“On all of these goals, we’re on the same page,” Sanwo-Olu said. “In Lagos State, sports is more than just a game—it is a powerful tool for social mobility, youth engagement, and creating real opportunities. We are committed to upgrading facilities, investing in grassroots talent, and partnering with those who share this vision.”

Later in the day, Governor Sanwo-Olu joined football stars, fans, and stakeholders at the #PlayForPurpose charity match—an initiative of the Troost-Ekong Foundation aimed at raising support for underprivileged children through sports.

The Governor, who briefly took to the field to show off some football skills, praised the foundation’s efforts.

“This initiative exemplifies how football can go beyond the pitch to become a force for good,” he noted. “It’s about inspiring hope, building futures, and transforming communities.”

He lauded Troost-Ekong for using his platform to lead with purpose, both on and off the field.

“William is leading by example. His passion for the game is matched only by his commitment to uplifting others. Lagos proudly stands with him as we work together to build a stronger future for Nigerian sports,” he added.

The charity match drew attention from celebrities, football enthusiasts, and youth groups across the country, highlighting the enduring power of sports to unite, inspire, and drive positive change.
