As Muslims across Nigeria observed the holy festival of Eid-El-Adha, Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu joined in the celebrations and used the occasion to advocate for enhanced national security and collective responsibility in addressing the country's challenges.

Speaking through his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, during a special event held at The Pavilion, Lagos House, Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the spiritual importance of Eid-El-Adha and its relevance to the ongoing call for peace and stability across Nigeria. The event was themed “My Lord, Make This Land Secure” (Qur’an 14:35).

“Eid-El-Adha is a sacred moment of reflection, sacrifice, and devotion. It also serves as a timely reminder for us as a nation to confront our most urgent challenges particularly in the area of security,” the Governor said.

He urged citizens to support the work of security agencies and to play their part in building safer, united communities. Governor Sanwo-Olu extended his heartfelt greetings to Muslims in Lagos and across the country, encouraging them to embrace the values of obedience, selflessness, and compassion hallmarks of Prophet Ibrahim’s (SAW) example.

“We are reminded through this festival of the profound virtues of sacrifice and obedience. As a people, these virtues must guide our interactions and our nation-building efforts,” he added.

The Governor also acknowledged the dedication of security operatives who ensured peace throughout the festive period, commending their tireless service and urging continued professionalism.

He reassured residents of his administration’s unwavering commitment to promoting religious harmony, inclusive governance, and the overall well-being of Lagosians.

“Let us stay united and hopeful. Together, with sustained efforts and a sense of shared purpose, we can overcome the pressing socio-economic and security challenges facing Nigeria,” he concluded.

In her goodwill message, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, encouraged Nigerians to recommit to the spiritual values of sacrifice, unity, and devotion to God.

She reflected on the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (SAW) and his son Ismail (SAW), describing their submission to God’s will as a timeless lesson in trust and obedience. Mrs. Hamzat also praised the leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dr. Hamzat, commending their efforts to foster inclusive development and religious tolerance in Lagos.

“This is a time to deepen our faith and work toward a more peaceful, united nation,” she said.

Delivering the keynote lecture, renowned Islamic scholar Dr. Saheed Ahmad drew attention to the deeper spiritual and moral dimensions of security. Citing Prophet Ibrahim’s (SAW) prayer for Makkah, he stated that laws alone cannot secure a nation; a collective commitment to justice, ethics, and righteousness is essential.

“Security is not anchored in legislation alone, but in the moral discipline and spiritual consciousness of the people,” he said.

Dr. Ahmad warned against the misuse of public office, communal distrust, and disregard for the sacrifices of past leaders. He stressed that both citizens and leaders must embrace accountability and preserve the legacy of progress.

“This land is a pot that feeds all. We must not drain it while we eat,” he cautioned, urging leaders to pursue lasting legacies rather than short-term gains.

He also advised leaders to surround themselves with truth-tellers and avoid sycophants, warning against the dangers of institutional amnesia and entitlement.

The event featured special prayers for national peace, successful governance, and the continued growth of Lagos State. It was attended by key dignitaries, including Governor Sanwo-Olu, members of the State Executive Council, Permanent Secretaries, Islamic clerics, community leaders, and members of the public.

The atmosphere was filled with gratitude, Quranic recitations, and musical renditions, reflecting the spirit of sacrifice and unity at the heart of Eid-El-Adha.
