The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable waste management and environmental preservation by signing three separate Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with reputable companies at the conclusion of the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit held at the Continental Hotel, Victoria Island. The agreements, centered on waste conversion and recycling initiatives, mark a major step toward the state’s goal of transforming waste into wealth and reducing the volume of refuse that ends up in landfills.

Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, highlighted the government’s resolve to transition from traditional linear waste management to a more circular, sustainable system. He noted that one of the MoUs signed with HAK Waste Limited focuses on establishing a circular beverage container bottle recycling and recovery system under the Extended Producer’s Responsibility Mechanism (EPRM). This initiative, he said, will promote waste reduction through a deposit refund model while strengthening investor confidence in the state’s environmental policies.

Wahab further explained that another agreement with Haggai Logistics Limited will lead to the creation of a world-class tyre collection and recycling plant in Lagos. The facility, which will be the first of its kind in Nigeria, is designed to process end-of-life tyres using advanced, automated recycling technologies. Additionally, the Commissioner revealed that the third MoU with Mondo 4 Africa will focus on converting non-recyclable plastic waste into sustainable fuel and other useful resources through environmentally friendly methods, further reinforcing Lagos’ circular economy goals.

He emphasized that the state government will continue to intensify public sensitisation campaigns to encourage residents to sort their waste from the source and adopt a new mindset that recognises waste as a valuable resource. According to him, changing the perception of waste and integrating innovative recycling systems are crucial to building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos. Wahab also pointed out that the government is exploring long-term financing options to support these initiatives while considering the state’s vulnerabilities as a coastal region.

The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the MoUs as a testament to the government’s dedication to improving the state’s environmental landscape through public-private partnerships. He noted that effective waste management cannot be achieved by the government alone, but through collaboration with private investors who share the state’s vision of transforming waste into wealth. Representatives of the partner companies expressed appreciation for the opportunity to work with the Lagos State Government, pledging their full commitment to actualising the waste-to-wealth initiative and supporting the #AGreaterLagosRising agenda.
