The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promoting a society grounded in dignity, compassion, and justice. This was highlighted at the Workshop for Religious and Community Leaders in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence, held on Wednesday, 5th November 2025, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja, under the theme, “Restoring Dignity Through Faith and Leadership.” The workshop aimed to foster collaboration between government institutions, religious leaders, and community stakeholders in addressing GBV.

Delivering the keynote address, Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. (Mrs.) Bolaji Cecilia Dada, emphasised that GBV is not only a social issue but also a moral and spiritual crisis that erodes family and community structures. She stated, “Our faith traditions teach compassion, fairness, and respect for human life. Violence, whether physical, emotional, or economic, contradicts every moral and spiritual principle we hold dear. To restore dignity, we must harness the power of faith and leadership to speak out, guide, and heal.”

Hon. Dada highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing initiatives under Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s leadership, which combine advocacy, empowerment, rehabilitation, and community engagement to support survivors and hold offenders accountable. She noted that Domestic Violence Units across the State have been strengthened to provide psychosocial support, medical care, legal referrals, and temporary shelter, while sensitisation campaigns now actively engage men and boys as allies in promoting equality and non-violence.

The workshop also featured lectures and interactive sessions led by experts, including Dr. Samson Oyefolu of Lagos State University, who educated participants on various forms of violence, their causes, and their implications for sustainable development. Participants were guided on the role of faith and community leaders in discouraging abuse, promoting accountability, and advocating for peace and protection of vulnerable individuals in their communities.

In her closing remarks, Hon. Dada reaffirmed WAPA’s dedication to the THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly in Social Inclusion, Gender Equality, and Human Capacity Development. Permanent Secretary Mrs. Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo and other stakeholders commended the Ministry’s efforts, highlighting the vital role of collaboration with NGOs, CDAs, CDCs, religious and traditional leaders, and the media in building a Lagos free from violence. WAPA remains resolute in creating a safe environment where all individuals, regardless of gender, can live free from fear, violence, and discrimination..
