Tobi Amusan, born Oluwatobiloba Ayomide Amusan on April 23, 1997, in Ijebu Ode, Nigeria, is a celebrated Nigerian track and field athlete who specializes in the 100 meters hurdles and also competes as a sprinter. The youngest of three children, she was born to parents who were both school teachers. Despite her father initially discouraging her pursuit of athletics, Tobi's determination, coupled with her mother's encouragement, saw her transition from initially training as a footballer to focusing on track events. She attended Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in her hometown before moving on to the United States to study at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), where she excelled both academically and athletically.

Amusan's athletic career gained significant traction early on, winning a silver medal in the 200 meters at the 2013 African Youth Championships. A year later, she claimed another silver in the 100 meters hurdles at the African Youth Games. Her ascent continued when, at the age of 18 in 2015, she won the gold medal in the 100 meters hurdles at the African Games in Brazzaville, Congo. This victory was a major stepping stone, propelling her onto the international stage and setting the foundation for her future success. Her dedication to the sport, despite early family opposition, cemented her path as a formidable athlete.

The year 2022 marked the defining period of Amusan's career, establishing her as a world-class athlete. At the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, she shattered the world record in the 100 meters hurdles semi-final with an astonishing time of 12.12 seconds , becoming the first ever Nigerian world champion and world record holder in an athletics event. She went on to win the gold medal in the final with an even faster, though wind-assisted, time of 12.06 seconds. Beyond this monumental achievement, she also secured back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in the 100m hurdles in both 2018 and 2022, demonstrating her consistent dominance in the event across major championships.

In addition to her World Championship and continental titles, Tobi Amusan has also left an indelible mark on the Diamond League circuit. She became the first Nigerian athlete to win a Diamond League title when she took the 100m hurdles trophy in 2021, breaking the then-African record. She has maintained a winning streak, clinching the Diamond League title for three consecutive years in 2021, 2022, and 2023. These victories, along with her status as a two-time African Games champion, highlight her enduring excellence and consistency at the highest level of the sport.

Tobi Amusan's journey from Ijebu Ode to global track stardom is a powerful narrative of perseverance and triumph. Her numerous accolades, including the world record in the 100 meters hurdles, three consecutive Diamond League titles, and multiple Commonwealth and African championships, cement her legacy as one of Nigeria's greatest track and field athletes. Her accomplishments have not only brought international recognition to her but also served as a source of national pride, inspiring a new generation of athletes.
