Teniola Apata, professionally known as Teni (or Teni The Entertainer, Teni Makanaki), is an award-winning Nigerian singer, songwriter, and performer in the Afrobeats and Pop genres. Born on December 23, 1993, in Lagos State, Nigeria, she is the younger sister of fellow Nigerian singer Niniola. Teni's early life in Lagos, in a large, communal family environment, provided a rich backdrop of diverse musical influences, including Nigerian genres like Fuji, Jùjú, Highlife, and even Indian music, which all contributed to her eclectic musical taste.

Teni attended Apata Memorial High School before relocating to the United States for higher education. She initially enrolled at the University of Georgia but completed her degree in Business Administration at the American InterContinental University in Atlanta. While in university, she began making music in the campus recording studio, which she did not enjoy due to a lack of other activities. Upon earning her degree, Teni returned to Nigeria to pursue her music career. She released her debut single "Amen" while signed to Shizzi's Magic Fingers Records, later signing with Dr. Dolor Entertainment in 2017.

Teni started gaining prominence after releasing the single "Fargin" in September 2017. She achieved a major breakthrough with hit singles like "Askamaya," "Case," and "Uyo Meyo." Her musical style is noted for its unique blend of Afrobeats, Pop, and Rap, characterized by playful and sprightly delivery, often laced with humour and relatability. She makes a conscious effort to include different Nigerian languages, proverbs, and traditional references in her music, drawing inspiration from legendary Nigerian artists like King Sunny Adé and Ebenezer Obey.

Following her breakthrough singles, Teni released her debut EP, "Billionaire," in October 2019, which featured six tracks. In 2020, she partnered with DJ Neptune for the "Quarantine Playlist" EP. Her highly anticipated debut album, "WONDALAND," was released in 2021. Teni has received significant recognition, including being nominated for the Best International Act at the BET Awards in 2019. Her hit song "Case" won her an award at the Headies Award for Rookie of the Year in 2018, among other wins at the Headies in 2019.

Teni's contributions to the Nigerian music industry have been recognized at the highest level. In October 2022, she was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by the then-President Muhammadu Buhari, in recognition of her achievements and service. Teni continues to be a unique and influential figure in Afrobeats, known for her powerful vocals, songwriting talent, and endearing "Entertainer" personality, which she frequently showcases through social media skits and in her music videos.
