Princess Damilola Sonayon-James | A New Face in Lagos Politics

Princess Damilola Sonayon-James has emerged as one of the most closely watched figures in Lagos politics following her emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election. While she comes from a respected royal family in Badagry, her political rise has been shaped by years of party service, community engagement and professional experience.

A granddaughter of the late Oba Afolabi James of Kweme Kingdom in Badagry West, Princess Damilola combines traditional heritage with modern leadership. Her appointment reflects not only her personal journey but also the growing recognition of Badagry's place in Lagos' political landscape.

Her political career began at the grassroots, where she served as Supervisory Councillor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry West Local Council Development Area. She later became the APC Assistant State Woman Leader, helping to strengthen the party's outreach among women and young people across Lagos. Although she experienced setbacks earlier in her political journey, including unsuccessful bids for key local government positions, she remained active within the party structure.

Beyond politics, Princess Damilola has built a career in business and sustainability consulting. She is the Managing Director of DGS Chauffeurs & Logistics, has worked as a consultant with BOLT Nigeria, and specialises in environmental, social and governance (ESG) risk advisory. Her corporate background has contributed to her reputation as a leader who understands both public policy and private sector management.

Her educational qualifications further reinforce that profile. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Business Management from the University of Hull and later obtained a Master's degree in Social Work with a specialisation in Community Development from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH).

Princess Damilola is also recognised for community-based initiatives in Badagry. Among her notable projects is the "Light Up Project," which provided solar-powered streetlights in selected communities while supporting students with educational materials. These efforts have strengthened her standing as a public servant focused on local development.

Her selection as the APC deputy governorship candidate alongside incumbent Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat received the endorsement of the party's leadership, including the Governance Advisory Council (GAC). The decision has been widely viewed as both recognition of her years of service and an opportunity to increase Badagry's representation in the state's leadership.

At 40, Princess Damilola Sonayon-James represents a younger generation of political leaders seeking to blend grassroots experience, professional expertise and community development. As the 2027 election approaches, her ability to translate political goodwill into effective governance will remain a key measure of her leadership.
