The Permanent Secretary, Office of Internal Audit (OIA), Mrs. Monsurat Titilope Alaka, has strongly reinforced the Lagos State Government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, stressing the critical, non-negotiable role internal auditors play in this mandate. Addressing the state's public service auditors for the first time, she defined internal auditors as the backbone of institutional integrity. Their responsibilities extend beyond mere checks, encompassing the safeguarding of public resources, ensuring regulatory compliance, detecting irregularities, and upholding the financial discipline essential for maintaining public trust. This core function is vital to the integrity and credibility of all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across the state.

Mrs. Alaka placed a heavy emphasis on the personal qualities required for the demanding profession, singling out accountability and integrity as foundational values. She urged auditors to execute their duties with total diligence, noting that the expectations placed upon them demand a high level of discipline, focus, and personal responsibility. The Permanent Secretary stressed that their work directly influences the efficiency and credibility of government operations. Furthermore, she warned that qualities like punctuality, full commitment, flexibility, and a strong sense of ownership are mandatory; officers lacking these attributes risk being sidelined or failing to meet service benchmarks.

A significant portion of her address focused on leadership and mentorship within the audit units. Mrs. Alaka advised senior officers and unit heads to actively foster supportive and collaborative work environments. Key practices include building healthy professional relationships, mentoring subordinates, and ensuring clear, prompt communication of instructions. She highlighted that these actions are crucial not only for enhancing overall unit productivity but also for aiding younger officers in gaining the necessary confidence, competence, and foundational support for successful career growth within the service.

Recognizing the dynamic nature of the field, the Permanent Secretary strongly encouraged all auditors to prioritize continuous professional development. She underlined the need to invest in lifelong learning given the ever-evolving auditing landscape. Auditors were urged to embrace every learning opportunity, acquire new skills, and remain updated on modern audit techniques, new technologies, and global best practices. This commitment to ongoing education ensures that the OIA remains equipped to handle increasingly complex financial and governance challenges.

The Lagos State Interministerial Drug Abuse Control Committee (LSIDACC), in a crucial collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), executed a two-day sensitisation campaign in Agege, targeting secondary school students and youths. Held under the theme, "Drugs/Substance Abuse and You: What Every Young Person Should Know," the event underscored the Lagos State Government's efforts to safeguard the future of its youth from the destructive impact of drug abuse. The Coordinating Director of the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Folashade Oludara, urged the participants to return to their schools as ambassadors against substance abuse, emphasizing that making healthy choices is the strongest defence against negative peer influence.
