Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu formally inaugurated the newly appointed Governing Council of the Lagos State University (LASU) at Lagos House, Ikeja. This significant ceremony marked the official commencement of duty for the council, which is tasked with providing visionary leadership and strategic direction for one of Nigeria's most respected institutions. The Governor emphasized that the appointment was a reflection of his administration's unwavering commitment to sustaining LASU's hard-earned reputation for academic excellence and strengthening the quality of tertiary education across the state. The event brought together key stakeholders, including top government officials and the university's management, highlighting the high importance the state government places on the institution's governance

In his address, Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the new Governing Council to provide visionary, focused, and principled leadership that would consolidate LASU’s position as a leading university both in Nigeria and on the global stage. He noted that LASU has recently become the most sought-after university in the country, a feat he attributed to stable academic sessions, strong governance, and improved facilities. The Governor stressed that the new council's mandate is to build on this foundation by prioritizing stability, academic excellence, transparency, and financial accountability. He urged the members to define a long-term vision capable of sustaining the university's momentum in an era of rapid global educational transformation.
The newly constituted 13th Governing Council is chaired by the highly accomplished legal practitioner, Mr. Babatunde Ogala, SAN. The 11-member council comprises a mix of accomplished professionals, academics, and corporate leaders drawn from various sectors, underscoring a commitment to robust and diverse institutional governance. Key members include Mr. Oluseyi Badmus, Mr. Bode Makanjuola, Mrs. Mojisola Tolagbe Taiwo, Prof. Shaffudeen Amuwo, and Alhaji Rafiu Adisa Ebiti, among others. Their collective wealth of experience is expected to bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and corporate best practices to the administration and policy-making processes of the university.
Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the necessity for LASU to maintain strong ties with its host community and serve as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. He explicitly challenged the notion of a university as an "ivory tower detached from reality," urging the council to steer the institution towards becoming a generator of solutions that directly address societal challenges. The Governor reinforced that education remains the most powerful instrument for societal progress, capable of stimulating innovation and strengthening democratic institutions. He promised the state government's continued support to ensure LASU becomes the benchmark for higher education in Africa.
The sensitisation session, attended by labour leaders from various unions and key directors, underscored a strong shared commitment to the ongoing reforms. The event forms a crucial part of the wider process dedicated to ensuring that the Lagos State Public Service Rules (2025) emerges as a robust, shared blueprint. This blueprint is ultimately intended to reflect the collective goals of building a modern, highly professional, and globally competitive public service for the state.
