Mobolaji Ogunlende: Driving Youth Development and Social Inclusion in Lagos

For Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, youth development extends beyond creating programmes for young people. It also involves building structures that help them discover their talents, develop their abilities and participate meaningfully in their communities. As Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Ogunlende’s public responsibilities span youth empowerment, grassroots sports development and social welfare, including the protection of vulnerable children.

One of the central themes of his work is the need to give young people opportunities to channel their energy into productive activities. In September 2026, Ogunlende highlighted this priority during the distribution of sports equipment to the 57 local government areas and local council development areas in Lagos. The initiative was designed to improve access to sporting facilities at the community level and create opportunities for young people to participate in sports, develop their abilities and pursue competitive opportunities.

The distribution also reflected an effort to extend sports development beyond schools and into local communities. Ogunlende said the equipment would help coaches and sports organisers identify promising athletes and support their development from grassroots competitions towards state, national and international levels. He also stressed the importance of ensuring that the equipment was properly maintained and made available to its intended beneficiaries.

His portfolio, however, goes beyond sports and youth engagement. Child protection and social welfare are also significant parts of the ministry’s responsibilities. At a ministerial briefing in May 2026, Ogunlende reported that the state had recorded 1,437 child protection cases and carried out more than 5,708 interventions involving issues such as abuse, trafficking, neglect, abandonment, rehabilitation and psychosocial support. The figures highlighted the scale of the work required to protect vulnerable children and support affected families across Lagos.

Technology has also featured in the ministry’s approach to social welfare. In July 2026, Ogunlende announced plans to introduce automated childcare services for orphanage homes in Lagos. The proposed system was intended to improve record management, monitoring, accountability and coordination in childcare administration, demonstrating the potential role of digital systems in strengthening public services.

Leadership development remains another part of his public agenda. In March 2026, Ogunlende reaffirmed the state government's commitment to developing young leaders at the IBILE Youth Academy's 2025/2026 One-Day Leadership Summit in Alausa, Ikeja. He emphasised the importance of deliberately nurturing leadership, maintaining institutional support and preparing younger generations to assume responsibilities in the future.

Taken together, these initiatives present a picture of public service that connects youth development with community participation and social protection. Sports programmes can provide young people with opportunities to develop their talents, leadership initiatives can encourage civic participation, and child welfare interventions can help protect those facing difficult circumstances. The effectiveness of these efforts ultimately depends on implementation, accessibility and measurable improvements in people's lives.

As Lagos continues to grow, the demands on its youth and social development institutions will remain substantial. Ogunlende's role places him at the intersection of these challenges, with responsibilities that require attention to both the aspirations of young people and the needs of vulnerable residents. His recent public activities offer a useful perspective on how the ministry is approaching these responsibilities, particularly through grassroots sports, youth leadership and the modernisation of social welfare services.
