The Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB) hosted the Nigerian Library Association (NLA), Lagos Chapter, for its annual seminar themed “Libraries and Archives as Gateways to Intangible Cultural Heritage.” The event, a major activity in the NLA’s week-long programme, brought together librarians, archivists, and information professionals to explore how libraries and archives can safeguard Nigeria’s diverse intangible cultural heritage and strengthen collective memory.

In her keynote address, Ms. Toyin Ogunlana, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Cabinet Office, underscored the critical importance of documenting oral traditions, indigenous knowledge systems, community practices, and local historical narratives. She highlighted the need to prioritise digital preservation, enhance professional capacity building, and deepen collaboration across cultural heritage institutions to ensure long-term access and protection of Nigeria’s cultural assets.

Chairperson of the NLA Lagos Chapter, Mrs. Aisha Askira, praised LASRAB for hosting the seminar and for enriching the learning experience with guided tours of its photo gallery, library, and newspaper morgue. She encouraged parents and guardians to actively promote cultural values by embracing local foods, traditional attire, and indigenous languages key elements that strengthen identity and sustain cultural continuity among younger generations.

A panel session further expanded the conversation, offering insights into effective documentation methods, community engagement strategies, and sustainable models for cultural heritage preservation. Goodwill messages from Dr. Racheal Odunlade of the University of Lagos and Dr. Taiwo Ajayi, Immediate Past Chairman of the Chapter, reinforced the urgency of preserving cultural heritage, improving visibility of library services, and leveraging LASRAB’s expertise to bridge knowledge gaps.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation of an appreciation award to Ms. Ogunlana by the NLA Lagos Chapter in recognition of her support and contributions to cultural preservation efforts. The seminar concluded with a collective call for stronger institutional support, increased funding, and continuous professional development to advance the safeguarding of Lagos State’s rich and vibrant cultural heritage.
