The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has strengthened its partnership with the Ikeja Local Government as part of efforts to expand green, clean, and sustainable public spaces across the state. This renewed collaboration was solidified during a courtesy visit by the General Manager of LASPARK, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, to the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD).

During the meeting, Mrs. Popoola reaffirmed LASPARK’s commitment to positioning Ikeja as a leading model for urban greening in Lagos. She highlighted the agency’s core responsibilities, which include beautifying and maintaining parks and gardens, promoting state-wide forestation through robust tree planting, and enhancing public wellness through well-managed recreational spaces. She also disclosed the agency’s target to plant 25,000 trees across Lagos by July 2026, with Ikeja expected to contribute significantly through planned planting of at least 5,000 trees.
The LASPARK General Manager identified numerous locations within Ikeja with strong potential for green development, such as the Ikeja Under-Bridge corridor, community open spaces, and major setbacks across the city. She emphasized that despite the presence of notable parks like Ndubuisi Kanu Park and JJT Park, there is a need to create additional green areas to meet growing environmental and recreational demands. Mrs. Popoola also expressed concern about the rising cases of indiscriminate tree felling, particularly within the GRA, and called for stronger enforcement of tree management regulations.
In response, Chairman Dauda described the visit as timely, affirming the council’s resolve to restore Ikeja’s aesthetic and environmental appeal. He noted that several areas have already been identified for beautification, including the Secretariat–Simbiat Abiola Road corridor, the LAWMA stretch, and the LASUTH perimeter setback. The Chairman also appealed to LASPARK to expand its annual Christmas decorations from Allen Roundabout to include Alausa and the Local Government Headquarters while seeking support for tree pruning and school environment beautification.

Chairman Dauda further highlighted the council’s commitment to improving hygiene and environmental health by addressing open defecation through the establishment of modern public toilets at strategic locations. He assured LASPARK of Ikeja Local Government’s unwavering support throughout 2026 and beyond, pledging to work collaboratively to deliver a greener, healthier, and more vibrant capital city for future generations.
