The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, has distributed over 300 food packs and vitamin supplements to indigent pregnant women across Health District IV as part of its ongoing commitment to improving maternal and child health. The outreach, held at Akerele Primary Healthcare Centre in Surulere, reinforces the State’s dedication to supporting vulnerable expectant mothers with essential nutrition for healthy pregnancies and improved developmental outcomes.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Office, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, said the initiative reflects the government’s resolve to ensure that every pregnant woman and her unborn child has access to adequate nutrition for proper growth. She noted that building a peaceful, progressive, and secure Lagos begins with giving every child—from conception through adulthood a fair opportunity to thrive. According to her, civically responsible citizens are nurtured from the womb, as global studies affirm that the foundational stages of life occur between conception and early childhood.

Engr. Shasore also revealed that over 6,280 beneficiaries have been reached since the inception of the programme across the six health districts of Lagos State. This milestone, she said, reaffirms the State Government’s unwavering commitment to the well-being of mothers, infants, and children. She added that sustained investments in maternal health are crucial for building a stronger society and improving long-term developmental outcomes.

In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of Health District IV, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, described pregnancy as a journey filled with hope, anticipation, and love. He acknowledged that while the period can be challenging, the Lagos State Government remains committed to supporting pregnant women, as their well-being forms the foundation of strong families and a prosperous society. He explained that the Mother, Infant and Child Development Programme is a compassionate initiative designed to boost neonatal brain development, support healthy pregnancies, and assist indigent expectant mothers across the State.

The event concluded with the distribution of nutritious food packs, vitamins, and essential supplements to promote healthy pregnancies and combat malnutrition within the Surulere community. Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its continued support, describing the initiative as a timely intervention that ensures healthier outcomes for mothers and their unborn children.
