The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to a strategic collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, a move aimed at significantly strengthening maritime security and ensuring a safer environment for all residents and businesses. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu made this known during the Nigerian Navy’s 2025 Ceremonial Sunset and Awards Dinner, where he lauded the Navy's men and women for their professionalism and immense sacrifices. Governor Sanwo-Olu further stressed that effective maritime security is fundamental to Lagos’ sustained economic growth, boosting investor confidence, and ensuring overall public safety within the state. He commended the Nigerian Navy for their sustained efforts in actively combating maritime crimes, illegal activities on the waterways, and other security threats that challenge the state's stability. In light of this, he assured the Navy of the state's continuous readiness to support initiatives that will enhance their operational capacity, intelligence sharing, and inter-agency cooperation among security outfits.

The state government pledged to deepen its collaboration with the Navy through sustained engagement, providing necessary logistical support, and aligning policies to promote peace, security, and prosperity across Lagos’ entire maritime domain. Congratulating the officers and ratings honoured at the ceremony, the Governor urged them to remain steadfast in upholding the core values of integrity, discipline, and patriotism, noting that their service inspires confidence in Nigeria’s security architecture.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, explained that the Ceremonial Sunset tradition has been adopted worldwide as a maritime legacy, dating back to the 17th century and originating from the British Royal Navy. The event’s highlights included a formal parade, the solemn lowering of the national flag to honour fallen sailors, and the presentation of awards and certificates to distinguished Nigerian Navy personnel.
