The Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), with crucial support from the IMPACT Project, successfully completed a comprehensive two-day capacity-building training on the District Health Information System (DHIS2). This initiative is a core part of the state and national efforts to enhance health information systems by digitising data management processes. The training, which ran between November 24th and November 28th, 2025, focused on equipping Health Information Officers (HIM) and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) Officers across the 57 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) with advanced skills in digital health data management.

The capacity-building program, conducted across three groups at locations like Orchid Hotel, Lekki, and LCCI Ikeja, focused on key competencies vital for strengthening routine health data reporting. The participants were extensively trained in Computer-based data capturing and synchronisation, web-based DHIS2 data entry, and crucial data quality assurance (DQA) techniques. Dr. Ibrahim Akinwunmi Mustafa, Permanent Secretary of the LSPHCB, highlighted that since its adoption in 2006, DHIS2 has remained Nigeria’s official platform for managing routine health data from over 37,000 facilities nationwide.

In his address, Dr. Mustafa, represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Temitope Balogun-Alo, emphasised that this digitisation is a continuous effort aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of data flows from the health facilities up to the local government and state levels. Participants gained exposure to advanced modules, including understanding DHIS2 core components (data elements, datasets, indicators) and mastering techniques for data analysis using DHIS2 tools such as Pivot Tables, Maps, Dashboards, and Data Visualizers.  These skills are critical for translating raw data into actionable insights for decision-makers.

A significant component of the exercise was the distribution of 342 new branded laptops to Primary Health Care (PHC) facilities across the State. This provision of hardware is an essential practical step, ensuring that the newly trained officers have the necessary tools to implement their skills immediately and sustain the digital transformation. Dr. Mustafa noted that providing these core competencies and tools is vital for ensuring accuracy and timeliness in reporting, which ultimately leads to improved planning and decision-making within the primary healthcare system.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Lagos State Government assured residents that it will continue to develop programmes, policies, and support systems aimed at protecting young people. The state urged students to stay focused, make responsible choices, and take advantage of available counselling and support platforms to build a drug-free future.
