The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating women’s strength, resilience, and impact through the Lagos Women Run (LWR), which marks its 10th anniversary this year. Speaking at a press briefing held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, the Director-General of LSSC, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the Lagos Women Run as more than just a sporting event but a social movement that champions inclusion, empowerment, and gender equality. He noted that Lagos remains honoured to be the home of a platform that has grown to inspire thousands of women to break barriers and embrace wellness, leadership, and community impact.

Fatodu, while unveiling details of the milestone edition, disclosed that over 8,000 women have registered for the race, a record-breaking number that underscores the growing influence of the initiative. This year’s theme, “One Run, A Thousand Opportunities,” he said, is both symbolic and timely as it reflects the power of collective action and the infinite possibilities that arise when women come together in pursuit of shared goals. “Every stride taken by women represents more than just movement,” he explained. “It embodies the countless opportunities for self-discovery, inclusion, and progress all anchored on the resilience and boundless potential of women in society.
The LSSC boss also highlighted the transformative journey of the Lagos Women Run over the past decade, noting that what began as a modest effort to promote fitness among women has evolved into one of the most unifying and recognisable women-focused events in Nigeria and beyond. According to him, the Run has created a strong sense of community while promoting healthy lifestyles, self-expression, and social connection among women of different backgrounds, professions, and nationalities
In her remarks, the Coordinator of Lagos Women Run, Tayo Popoola, expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for its unwavering support and strategic partnership, which have been pivotal to the event’s continuity and success. She noted that the 10th anniversary signifies a decade of sustainability and growth, with participants drawn from across Nigeria and other parts of the world. Popoola reiterated that the Run continues to be a celebration of women’s achievements and a platform that amplifies their voices, encourages fitness, and fosters unity.

Also speaking, U-Meleni Mhlaba Adebo, the Ambassador for the Lagos Women Run 2025 10km race, shared her excitement about returning for this year’s edition. A Zimbabwean married to a Yoruba man, she described her first experience running in Lagos as an incredible opportunity to connect with the city’s vibrant spirit and people. Her story, like many others, reflects the inclusive and international appeal of the Lagos Women Run a platform where culture, fitness, and empowerment meet. As the countdown begins to the 10th edition, the LSSC reaffirmed its dedication to supporting initiatives that celebrate women, promote wellness, and advance the vision of a Greater Lagos Rising
