Aminat Adenike Alabi has emerged as the winner of the Open category of the 10th edition of the 2025 Lagos Women Run, claiming the top prize of 2 million naira. The experienced marathoner, who has competed in five different races including previous Lagos Women Runs, completed the 10-kilometre course in an impressive 39 minutes and 25.80 seconds, becoming the first Lagosian to etch her name in gold in the history of the event

The race started at the iconic Tafawa Balewa Square and concluded at the remodelled Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena in Onikan, with participants navigating through scenic and challenging routes across the city. The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, praised the 10th edition of Lagos Women Run as a celebration of a decade of consistency, commitment, and impact, highlighting the event’s role in promoting wellness, personal development, and economic opportunities through sports.

Fatodu emphasised that Alabi’s victory demonstrates the abundance of talent across Lagos State and the effectiveness of platforms like Lagos Women Run in identifying and nurturing local athletes. He commended the organisers for their resilience in producing new talents, building community cohesion, and promoting sports development, noting that Lagos continues to be at the centre of innovation and progress in athletics and beyond

According to Lagos Women Run Coordinator Tayo Popoola, the initiative began as a casual platform for women to interact through road races, fostering happiness, networking, and personal growth rather than focusing solely on monetary gains. Popoola explained that the race also serves as a preparatory event for elite runners, helping them train and energise for bigger competitions, while promoting inclusivity for women of all sizes and ages seeking physical activity and community engagement.

Alabi expressed her elation at winning the title, sharing that her rigorous training, adherence to her coach’s instructions, and support from her training partners were key factors in her success. She stated that her mission is to be the first Lagos marathoner to win the coveted title, and her victory this year is a testament to her dedication and determination. Second-place finisher Vivian Obadiah won 1.5 million naira with a time of 39:55.12, while Elizabeth Nuhu Power took third place with 40:39.83, earning 1 million naira.
