Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has reaffirmed the State Government’s dedication to leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a transformative force for creativity, innovation, and sustainable growth within the entertainment and media sectors. Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Adebopo Oyekan-Ismaila, the Commissioner made this known while delivering the keynote address at the European Union AI+ Entertainment Media Content Day, organized by the World Bank, held at Four Points by Sheraton, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event brought together innovators, creators, policymakers, and development partners to discuss the evolving intersection of technology and creativity.

In her address, Benson-Awoyinka emphasized that technology and creativity are inseparable drivers of the future of work, culture, and commerce. She reaffirmed Lagos’ position as Africa’s creative capital, citing continuous government investments in empowering filmmakers, musicians, fashion designers, and digital artists. “Technology and creativity are no longer separate conversations; they are two sides of the same coin,” she stated, highlighting the State’s efforts to create an ecosystem where innovation fuels artistic expression and global competitiveness.
The Commissioner also referenced the groundbreaking premiere of Makemation, Africa’s first feature film on Artificial Intelligence, as a major milestone in Nigeria’s creative and technological evolution. Supported by the Lagos State Government, the film underscores the State’s commitment to nurturing digital storytelling and advancing film technology. She explained that the project allows local filmmakers to explore AI-driven techniques such as intelligent scripting, advanced animation, and automated post-production, opening new frontiers for the Nigerian creative industry.
Benson-Awoyinka further noted that the Lagos Creative Industry Initiative (LACI) remains central to the State’s digital transformation agenda by equipping young creatives with essential digital and entrepreneurial skills. Through its innovation labs and partnerships, LACI ensures that Lagos’ creative sector contributes significantly to both entertainment and economic development. She commended the European Union and World Bank for their sustained support in strengthening Nigeria’s digital and creative economy, while advocating for ethical and culturally sensitive AI integration that protects intellectual property and promotes African narratives

Reiterating the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu under the THEMES Plus Agenda, Benson-Awoyinka stressed that the administration is building a 21st-century economy by connecting entertainment and tourism with education and technology. She urged stakeholders to embrace AI as a tool for empowerment rather than a threat to creativity, reminding participants that while technology drives progress, creativity remains the heartbeat of humanity. “As we embrace AI, we must continue to bridge innovation with culture to ensure Lagos and Africa lead the next wave of global storytelling,” she concluded
