Lagos State is set to make history as it hosts Africa’s first E1 Series electric boat racing championship on October 4 and 5, 2025.

The announcement was made during a press briefing led by Rodi Basso, Chief Executive Officer of the E1 Series, who revealed that Lagos secured the hosting rights ahead of several major global cities. He described the milestone as “a major achievement for sport, sustainability, and commerce in Africa,” adding that the championship showcases how marine transport can embrace innovation and clean energy solutions.

According to Basso, “The ocean is one of nature’s toughest frontiers, but with new designs and alternative power sources, boating can become more sustainable. The E1 Series demonstrates what’s possible.”

Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, said the event will highlight Lagos’ reputation as the “City of Aquatic Splendour,” projecting economic growth, global prestige, and tourism opportunities. “This is proof of Lagos’ capacity to host events that merge speed, sustainability, and innovation. History is happening here,” Egube declared.

Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, urged local industries including artisans, traders, fishermen, and hospitality operators to take advantage of the influx of visitors and investment opportunities. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, linked the event to the forthcoming Omi Eko Project, which will deploy 72 electric boats to boost marine transport and reduce traffic congestion.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who recently attended an E1 event in Monaco, said hosting the race affirms Lagos’ readiness to lead Africa in clean energy adoption, marine innovation, and global sporting engagement. The event is also expected to spotlight the state under the THEMES+ development agenda while reinforcing its position on the international stage.

Veteran sports journalists hailed the championship as a “game changer” that will firmly place Lagos on the global sporting and investment map.

I would like to participate in such races. Sports fans who understand a particular sport often bet on the outcome of the tournament. Various applications are often used for sports betting. For example, melbet app. Mobile forecasting applications allow you to track odds and statistics in real time, making the process flexible and strategically rich, turning sporting events into an intelligent challenge.
