In a strategic move to safeguard public health during the peak of the festive season, the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially launched the "Detty December, Safe December" campaign. This comprehensive HIV prevention and sensitization initiative is designed to provide residents, returning members of the diaspora, and visitors with the resources needed to celebrate responsibly. Supported by the technical expertise of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), the program directly aligns with the Governor’s THEMES+ Agenda, which prioritizes healthcare access and inclusive preventive interventions for all who reside in or visit the nation’s economic hub..

The campaign features a robust distribution network, aiming to provide over 10,000 HIV testing kits at strategic locations throughout the city. In addition to testing, the initiative ensures that male and female condoms and lubricants are freely available, alongside professional, confidential counseling and support services. These resources will be integrated into major "Detty December" events, including diaspora talks, social forums, and group engagements, ensuring that high-impact health interventions are seamlessly woven into the fabric of the season's festivities.

Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Office of Diaspora Affairs, ESV. Jermaine Sanwo-Olu, highlighted that the campaign reflects a people-centered approach to governance that treats health as a shared responsibility. He noted that as thousands of Lagosians return home from abroad to join in the year-end celebrations, the state is committed to ensuring that awareness and access to care remain top priorities. This proactive outreach is designed to empower individuals to make informed decisions about their wellbeing while enjoying the vibrant social life that Lagos is famous for during the holidays.

Dr. Folake Animashaun, CEO of LSACA, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to advancing the Governor’s vision for a healthier Lagos through technical and programmatic support. She emphasized that the political will demonstrated by the current administration has been instrumental in strengthening preventive healthcare frameworks. By leveraging diaspora networks and digital platforms, LSACA is working to ensure that accurate information and quality testing are accessible to everyone, reducing the risk of new infections during this high-contact period.

To maximize the reach of the "Detty December, Safe December" initiative, the state is calling on diaspora-based health professionals to volunteer their expertise for outreach and counseling efforts. By integrating media campaigns with on-ground community engagement, the Lagos State Government aims to foster an environment where celebration and safety coexist. For more information, testing, or volunteering opportunities, the public is encouraged to contact LSACA or the Office of Diaspora Affairs through their official digital channels and dedicated WhatsApp lines.
