The Lagos State Government has officially called on residents to maintain high standards of environmental cleanliness throughout the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued a statement emphasizing that the festive season typically leads to a surge in waste generation. He urged the public to avoid unsanitary practices that could undermine the state's aesthetic and health standards.

Commissioner Wahab highlighted the necessity of properly sorting and bagging waste, including animal and food remains, for evacuation by assigned Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. He reassured the public that the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is fully prepared to handle the increased workload during the holidays. Residents were encouraged to use designated collection points to prevent the littering of public spaces.

A significant portion of the government’s directive focused on the prohibition of cart pushers. The Commissioner cautioned that patronizing unauthorized waste collectors contributes to illegal dumping and environmental degradation. To combat this, LAWMA has made its Customer Care lines available for residents to report illegal dump sites or "black spots" within their communities, ensuring a rapid response from the state.

Beyond waste management, the state government issued a stern warning regarding fire safety during the dry season. Residents were advised against storing petrol or other inflammable materials in homes, shops, and markets. The Commissioner noted that the combustible nature of the environment during the Harmattan period increases the risk of fire outbreaks, making responsible storage a matter of public safety.

The statement concluded with a wish for an "environmentally responsible" holiday season for all Lagosians. By adhering to these sanitation and safety guidelines, the government believes the state can achieve a flood-free and healthy environment. The administration remains committed to its vision of a cleaner Lagos, urging every citizen to play their part in promoting public health through disciplined behavior.
