The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development recently marked the 2025 Social Work Day at Alausa, with the Commissioner, Mr. Mobolaji Abubakre Ogunlende, paying glowing tribute to the contributions of social workers. Speaking on the theme "Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing," the Commissioner underscored the fact that social workers are indispensable to maintaining peace and harmony. He described them as the frontline responders who nip social conflicts in the bud before they escalate into major crises.

Represented by Mr. Abiodun Dina, the Commissioner pointed out that social stability is the bedrock of a progressive state. He cited research indicating that children from stable family backgrounds generally perform better in life than those from broken homes, highlighting the role of social workers in reconciling families. By resolving domestic and communal issues, these professionals ensure that the peace and stability of Lagos remain unthreatened, allowing for social well-being to flourish across all demographics.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Pharm (Mrs) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, explained that the importance of the profession led Governor Sanwo-Olu to include "Social Inclusion" in his THEMES Plus Agenda. This policy shift ensures that no segment of society be it the elderly, children, or persons with disabilities is left behind in the distribution of social services. The Ministry is now saddled with expanded responsibilities to ensure that the impact of good governance is felt by the most vulnerable citizens.
The Director of Social Welfare, Dr. Toyin Jaiyeola, who represented the Permanent Secretary, added that the "Social Inclusion" policy was a deliberate move to foster a truly progressive state. By providing professional social services to those in need, the government is building a safety net that protects the dignity of all residents. The celebration served as a platform to honor those working tirelessly behind the scenes to implement these life-changing policies and provide support to the distressed.

The Chairman of the National Association of Social Workers (NASOW), Lagos State Chapter, Mrs. Saheed Adebambo, also spoke at the event, calling for continued advocacy for social justice. She noted that Social Work Day is not just a celebration but a call to action to raise awareness about the challenges facing society. The event ended with a renewed commitment from the state government to continue supporting social workers, recognizing their role as the "social fabric" that holds the community together.
