The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education proudly announced the outstanding performance of its student team at the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) 2025 International Final, held in Singapore. The 17-man Lagos delegation, led by the Honourable Commissioner, showcased the state's prowess in robotics and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education against a massive global field. This edition of the competition, themed "The Future of Robots," was the largest in WRO history, attracting 3,300 young innovators from 112 countries and 600 competing teams, making Lagos's achievement even more significant.

The Lagos State teams secured remarkable top placements in the African rankings across multiple competitive categories. In the Future Innovation (Junior Category), the team from Okesuna Junior Secondary School emerged 2nd in Africa with their SMART GUARD BOT, an AI-powered robot designed for electrical fault detection in Lagos Island and beyond. Similarly, Government Technical College, Ikotun, achieved 3rd in Africa in the Future Innovation (Senior Category) with their Spaar & Lego-Based Assistant Robot, a solar-powered AI agricultural robot for precision farming that aligns with multiple Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Leading the charge in the senior category, the team from New Era Senior High School, Surulere, clinched 1st in Africa in the Robo Mission category, demonstrating exceptional technical execution and understanding of engineering concepts. Not to be outdone, the junior team from New Era Girls Junior Secondary School, Surulere, secured 2nd in Africa in the Robo Mission (Junior) category, showcasing strong technical proficiency and excellent teamwork under pressure. The teams' success earned Nigeria recognition as one of the highest users of the WRO Learning Platforms for Robotics training.
These impressive student achievements highlight the tangible success of Lagos State's commitment to advancing STEM education and robotics development, providing platforms for young people to explore how science-intelligent machines can shape the future across fields like healthcare, agriculture, and urban sustainability. The projects were not abstract; they were designed to address real-world challenges pertinent to Lagos, such as electrical safety and the need for climate-smart, sustainable agriculture, demonstrating practical innovation.

The overall performance of the Lagos State teams at the WRO 2025 International Final serves as a powerful testament to Nigeria's rising capacity in global robotics education and the positive, measurable outcomes of the state's strategic investments in STEM. The success story reinforces the importance of platforms like the World Robot Olympiad, which promote innovation and critical problem-solving skills among the youth, positioning Lagos's students as future global leaders in technology and engineering..
