At the 11th International Climate Change Summit, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), Mrs. Bukola Odoe, underscored the vital role that PPPs play in driving sustainable investments and innovation within Africa’s blue economy. She noted that collaboration between the public and private sectors is key to unlocking climate-smart solutions capable of transforming environmental challenges into viable economic opportunities.

Mrs. Odoe highlighted Lagos State’s commitment to environmental sustainability through its groundbreaking waste management concession with the Jospong Group of Companies. Under this initiative, over 5,000 metric tonnes of solid waste are processed daily, significantly reducing environmental pollution while contributing to the state’s broader clean energy and resource recovery agenda.

She explained that the partnership demonstrates how strategic collaborations can effectively convert apwaste into economic value by producing recyclable materials and compost that support the agricultural value chain. This innovative model, she said, reflects Lagos State’s vision of creating circular economic systems that promote both environmental and economic resilience.

The Special Adviser further revealed that the state government is exploring bio-gas generation from liquid waste to power its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. This initiative aligns with Lagos’ long-term goal of transitioning toward cleaner, renewable energy sources while improving urban transportation efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

Mrs. Odoe reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to leading by example in environmental innovation and sustainability. She emphasized that through strategic PPPs and a results-driven approach, Lagos is positioning itself as a model for other African cities seeking to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility in the fight against climate change.
