The Lagos State Government has officially launched Phase II of the Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme, a strategic intervention aimed at boosting food production and stabilizing market prices across the state. Announced by the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, the initiative forms part of the state’s broader commitment to ensuring sustained food availability and affordability for millions of residents. The programme builds on the success of its first phase, which significantly eased production costs for farmers.

Speaking at the launch, Commissioner Olusanya emphasized that Phase II is designed to strengthen critical value chains and reduce the financial burden on farmers. She noted that agriculture remains central to Lagos’ economic resilience, and proactive measures like the Ounje Eko Programme are essential to supporting farmers amid rising production costs. By empowering key players in the sector, the state aims to enhance productivity, encourage local food systems, and promote long-term sustainability.
A major highlight of the programme is the provision of a 25% subsidy on poultry and fish feed two essential inputs that often determine the cost of protein in local markets. By reducing feed expenses, the government hopes to boost livestock and aquaculture output while keeping prices of eggs, poultry products, and fish within reach for Lagos families. This intervention will enable farmers to scale up operations, minimize losses, and improve overall profitability.
In addition to subsidies, the programme includes the distribution of fertilizers, farming inputs, and essential equipment to farmers across various communities. These supplies are expected to improve soil fertility, enhance crop yield, and support mechanized farming practices. The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to providing technical support and continuous monitoring to ensure transparency and effective utilization of the distributed resources.

The initiative further extends support to consumers through the Lagos Fresh Food Hub, where residents can access discounted food items. This measure aims to cushion households from rising food prices while strengthening the link between local producers and urban markets. With Phase II now underway, the Ounje Eko Farmers’ Subsidy Programme stands as a strong testament to Lagos State’s dedication to building a resilient, inclusive, and future-focused food system capable of meeting the nutritional needs of its growing population.
