The Lagos State Health District IV has engaged Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) within the district in a comprehensive training session on data management and referral systems aimed at improving maternal and child health outcomes. The initiative underscores the state’s commitment to integrating community-based health workers into the formal healthcare system for better service delivery and safer childbirth practices.

Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District IV, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, emphasized the importance of training TBAs to recognise danger signs during pregnancy and childbirth. He urged them to prioritise maternal safety by making timely referrals to skilled healthcare providers in cases of emergencies. Dr. Bowale also advised the participants to provide culturally sensitive, emotional, and physical support during prenatal and postpartum care to enhance maternal wellbeing.

The Director of Medical Services and Disease Control, Dr. Oludolapo Sotunde, noted that TBAs play a vital role in bridging the gap between communities and formal healthcare systems. He encouraged them to leverage their strong community relationships to build trust between expectant mothers and the healthcare system. Dr. Sotunde stressed the need for TBAs to formalise their operations and become active participants in the state’s referral network to ensure pregnant women receive timely and appropriate medical attention.

Guest Speaker, Mr. Babatunde Okelarin, provided an in-depth overview of professional standards for birth attendants, explaining that only individuals trained under certified traditional birth attendants recognized by the Lagos State Traditional Medicine Board can practise in the state. He also elaborated on data management tools, including the use of tally sheets, client referral forms, and monitoring systems, while educating participants on identifying pregnancy danger signs and the proper channels for referral.

By strengthening collaboration with Traditional Birth Attendants, the Lagos State Government aims to create a more responsive and integrated healthcare system that ensures every mother and child has access to quality, safe, and reliable medical care across the state.
