The Lagos State Government has renewed its call for students across the state to shun drug abuse, stressing that the rising cases of substance misuse pose a serious threat to the future of young people. This renewed warning was delivered during a sensitization programme organized by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Officials at the event emphasized that drug abuse continues to undermine the academic performance, personal development, and overall wellbeing of many young Nigerians. They highlighted that the early exposure of students to illicit substances remains a major concern, warning that it often leads to long-term health complications, behavioural issues, and involvement in criminal activities.
Schools were encouraged to intensify awareness campaigns and strengthen guidance counselling systems to ensure students receive consistent information about the dangers of drug misuse. The government noted that strengthening the partnership between schools, parents, and relevant agencies is key to combating the growing menace.
Parents and guardians were also advised to pay closer attention to behavioural changes in their children, maintain open communication channels, and create positive home environments that discourage risky habits. According to experts at the event, strong parental involvement plays a crucial role in preventing substance abuse among teenagers.

Reaffirming its commitment, the Lagos State Government assured residents that it will continue to develop programmes, policies, and support systems aimed at protecting young people. The state urged students to stay focused, make responsible choices, and take advantage of available counselling and support platforms to build a drug-free future.
