The Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, has emphasised the need for children to actively contribute to discussions on issues that affect them, noting that their participation in legislative conversations prepares them for governance at their level. He made this known during the Valedictory Session of the 6th Assembly and the Inauguration of the 7th Assembly of the Lagos State Children’s Parliament, held at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja.

In his keynote address, Mr. Ogunlende described the inauguration as a significant milestone in Lagos State’s commitment to empowering children and ensuring their involvement in democratic processes. He highlighted the administration’s dedication to inclusiveness, participation, and child empowerment, noting that the Children’s Parliament remains one of the State’s most impactful platforms for nurturing young leaders, advocating children’s rights, and promoting meaningful civic engagement.

The Permanent Secretary, Pharm. (Mrs.) Toyin Oke-Osanyintolu, reiterated that since its inception, the Children’s Parliament has provided a constructive platform for children to express their views, develop leadership skills, and engage in conversations that shape society. She affirmed that this aligns with the Ministry’s mandate to promote child rights, ensure protection, and prepare young people to become responsible citizens of the future.

Highlighting the achievements of the 6th Assembly, Mrs. Oke-Osanyintolu noted that the Parliament rendered charitable services to government homes and institutions for the less privileged, including elderly residents of the Old People’s Home in Yaba. Members also served as Water Ambassadors for the Lagos State Water Corporation, championing responsible water use and bill payment, and participated actively in major child-focused events such as the Children’s Day Celebration and the Day of the African Child, contributing meaningfully to policy conversations.

She reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the Children’s Parliament as a model for youth participation and leadership development, pledging continued support in line with the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State. The ceremony concluded with the swearing-in of Abdulsalam Anjolaoluwa as Speaker of the 7th Assembly, while laptops were presented to all 42 members of the 6th Assembly in recognition of their valuable contributions.
