The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) recently partnered with the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State, to organise a critical sensitisation session focused on technology-facilitated Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV). This was held at the Youth House in Yaba, drawing attention to a growing, yet often overlooked, dimension of gender violence in the modern age.

The session formed a central part of the activities commemorating the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, signaling the state's determined effort to address all forms of abuse. With the increasing reliance on digital platforms, the event recognised the urgent need to raise awareness about the dangers associated with digital spaces. It aimed to provide participants with concrete strategies to identify, prevent, and report online abuses effectively.
Facilitating the rigorous training were Ms. Aneela Deborah and Mr. Toisin Akinde, both respected members of the DSVA staff. Their expertise ensured that participants received practical, actionable guidance on safeguarding themselves and others in the digital environment. The session’s structure encouraged active engagement, ensuring the complex topic was broken down into easily digestible and shareable information for the youth in attendance.
The seriousness of the issue was underscored by the Chairman of NYCN, Lagos State, Engr. Edigun Ibrahim. In his opening remarks, he warmly welcomed the delegates and emphatically stressed the paramount importance of digital safety in today's increasingly connected world. His comments highlighted the commitment of the NYCN to youth welfare and its role in collaborating with state agencies to promote a safer society.

The successful execution of this programme is a significant stride in the fight against SGBV, particularly as the focus shifts to combating abuse facilitated by technology. By equipping youth and community leaders with the knowledge to navigate the digital sphere securely, Lagos State is setting a strong precedent for comprehensive SGBV intervention that acknowledges and addresses the evolving nature of gender-based crime.
