The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on Osborne Road, Ikoyi, from 10 p.m. on Friday, August 15, to midnight on Sunday, August 17, to enable the completion of critical drainage work in the area.
According to the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the project involves connecting newly constructed drains along Modupe Alakija Crescent to the underground drainage channel located beneath the median on Osborne Road. This will be achieved through the installation of a cross culvert, which requires cutting through a section of Osborne Road near Foreshore Towers.
“In line with our ongoing efforts to upgrade drainage systems across the state, it is necessary to connect the Modupe Alakija Crescent drains to the larger underground network along Osborne Road. This will help improve water flow, reduce flooding, and enhance the road’s long-term durability,” Osiyemi said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
To minimise disruption, the Ministry of Transportation has designed a traffic management plan to be implemented throughout the construction period. A counterflow arrangement will be introduced along Osborne and Alfred Rewane Road over a 100-metre stretch between Modupe Alakija Crescent and the Alfred Rewane Road junction.
Motorists travelling from Alfred Rewane Road to Osborne Road will be directed into a contraflow lane before merging back into the normal traffic lane.
Vehicles heading from Osborne Road to Alfred Rewane Road will be limited to a single lane to accommodate the contraflow system.
Alternative routes have also been advised: motorists travelling from Osborne Road toward Alfred Rewane Road can use Oba Adeyemi Oyekan Avenue to connect to Glover Road, Lugard Avenue, or Cameron Road. Similarly, motorists coming from Alfred Rewane Road to Osborne Road can follow the same roads in reverse.
Osiyemi assured that the entire stretch would be reopened to traffic on Monday, August 18, and emphasised that officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to direct vehicular movements, prevent gridlock, and reduce inconvenience to road users.
“This is a short-term inconvenience for long-term relief,” the commissioner said, urging residents and motorists to cooperate with traffic officials during the two-day diversion.
