The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and promoting a society grounded in dignity, compassion, and justice. This was highlighted at the Workshop for Religious and Community Leaders in the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence, held on Wednesday, 5th November 2025, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja, under the theme, “Restoring Dignity Through Faith and Leadership.” The workshop aimed to foster collaboration between government institutions, religious leaders, and community stakeholders in addressing GBV.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Idowu, represented by HEFAMAA’s Head of Research and Statistics, Dr. Olonire Olorunfemi, highlighted the dangers of unregulated herbal concoctions, which may contain unsafe substances that can harm vital organs if taken excessively or without professional guidance. She stressed that all medications, whether herbal or orthodox, should be consumed under professional supervision and at the correct dosage to prevent long-term health complications.
Dr. Idowu further emphasised that residents should always seek medical care from accredited facilities, which are periodically monitored and certified by HEFAMAA to ensure adherence to safety and quality standards. While cultural and traditional medicine practices are respected, she advised that only certified traditional practitioners operating within regulatory guidelines should be patronised. The Permanent Secretary also reaffirmed HEFAMAA’s commitment to providing reliable, safe, and affordable healthcare services for all Lagosians.
The sensitisation campaign in Somolu follows similar initiatives in other local councils, including Surulere, as part of a broader programme to educate residents on the dangers of unsafe healthcare practices and the importance of verifying the registration status of hospitals, clinics, and traditional medicine outlets before seeking treatment. Dr. Idowu reiterated that HEFAMAA will continue to monitor and accredit healthcare providers to safeguard public health in the state.

During the event, HEFAMAA’s Chief Nutrition Officer, Mr. Richard Olusanya, highlighted the agency’s regulatory mandate and the importance of proper registration and compliance. He warned against untrained individuals managing multiple medical services, describing such practices as dangerous quackery. Olusanya urged all health facility owners to prominently display their registration certificates to build public trust, enhance accountability, and ensure that healthcare delivery in Lagos meets professional and environmental standards.
