Lagos State Health District V has successfully conducted a specialized training program for nurses and midwives focused on Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) during labour and delivery. Held at the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Hall, the initiative is part of the state’s broader commitment to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. The training aimed to equip frontline healthcare providers with the latest protocols to prevent healthcare-associated infections.

Representing the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Stella Mofunlewi, the Director of Nursing Services, emphasized that safe motherhood is a top priority for the administration. She stated that adherence to standard IPC practices is a critical component of maternity care. The training ensures that healthcare workers are not only knowledgeable but also skilled in delivering "respectful maternity care" across all primary and secondary facilities.

The curriculum for the training included the appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), aseptic techniques, and the sterilization of delivery equipment. Practical demonstrations were a key feature of the program, allowing participants to practice the correct disinfection of labour wards. These hands-on sessions are designed to reinforce best practices and eliminate errors that could lead to preventable infections.

Interactive sessions allowed the nurses and midwives to share common challenges faced in their respective facilities and brainstorm practical solutions. The training emphasized the role of these professionals as "IPC Champions," encouraging them to take leadership in maintaining sterile environments. This collaborative approach fosters a culture of accountability and teamwork within the clinical setting.

By applying these newly acquired techniques, the District expects to see a significant improvement in health outcomes for both mothers and newborns. The event was supported by senior directors from Medical Services and Research, highlighting the multi-disciplinary effort to improve healthcare standards in Lagos.
