In a significant move to strengthen the bond between the state government and religious institutions, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu attended the Diocese of Lagos Bishops and Wives Retreat, organized by the Anglican Communion. The event, which gathered high-ranking clergy and their spouses, served as a platform for deep reflection on the intersection of spiritual leadership and governance in Nigeria’s commercial nerve center.

During the retreat, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his profound appreciation for the role faith-based organizations play in maintaining the social fabric of Lagos. He noted that being in the company of faith leaders provided a unique opportunity for "meaningful conversation and prayer," emphasizing that the moral guidance provided by the church is essential for fostering a peaceful and law-abiding citizenry. The Governor highlighted that his administration remains committed to an inclusive approach where spiritual leaders are viewed as key stakeholders in the state’s development agenda.

The Governor’s address touched on the heavy responsibilities borne by leaders and their families. He specifically acknowledged the wives of the Bishops, commending their silent but vital support systems that enable the clergy to serve effectively. By engaging with both the leaders and their spouses, Sanwo-Olu signaled a holistic recognition of the sacrifices made by religious families in their pursuit of communal well-being and spiritual growth.

Beyond the pleasantries, the retreat allowed for a robust dialogue on the challenges facing Lagosians, ranging from economic pressures to social stability. The Governor used the session to call for continued intercessory prayers for the state and the country, noting that while policy and infrastructure are the "bones" of a city, the values and prayers of the people are its "soul." He urged the Anglican Communion to remain a vocal advocate for justice, equity, and civic responsibility.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of partnership between the Lagos State Government and the Anglican Diocese. The Bishops, in their response, thanked the Governor for his presence and his administration’s openness to dialogue. This engagement underscores a growing trend in the Sanwo-Olu administration to seek divine wisdom and community consensus as they navigate the complexities of governing a mega-city in 2026.
