To mark the commencement of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day activities, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu hosted the Lagos Chapter of the Nigerian Legion during a State Executive Council meeting. The Governor used the occasion to express the state’s profound gratitude to the military veterans who have dedicated their lives to the nation's service. He emphasized that the peace and sovereignty currently enjoyed by Nigeria are the direct results of the bravery shown by these men and women.

During the meeting, the Governor announced a substantial support package to enhance the operations and welfare of the Legion. He committed ₦100 million in financial aid and donated two utility vehicles to assist with the organization’s logistics. This gesture is intended to ensure that the Legion has the necessary resources to carry out its administrative and supportive functions effectively across the state.

In a move to address the personal needs of the veterans, the state government is also providing four 2-bedroom apartments to members of the Legion. Beyond housing, the Governor pledged a steady supply of food and essential items to support the veterans and their families. He noted that such "real and tangible" support is the best way to honor those who returned from service with life-changing injuries.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the annual Emblem Appeal as a sacred responsibility that the government and citizens owe to those who laid down their lives for the country. He urged Lagosians to see the remembrance period not just as a ceremony, but as a moment of reflection on the cost of freedom. He reiterated that the state remains committed to ensuring that the sacrifices of the fallen heroes are never forgotten.

The event concluded with a formal decoration of the Governor and other top officials with the Remembrance Emblem. This act signaled the official launch of the fundraising window for the veterans. By integrating this support into the first week of the year, the Lagos State Government set a tone of inclusivity and appreciation for the defenders of the nation as they look toward the rest of 2026.
