Education District II Dominates Lagos Spelling Bee, Securing Top Honors and One-Day Governor Title

Education District II has once again demonstrated its academic prowess, sweeping the top three positions at the highly-anticipated 21st Annual Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition (Secondary School Category). The impressive performance saw the district claim the coveted title of One-Day Governor and Deputy Governor, reaffirming its standing as a powerhouse in the state's education sector following a fiercely contested final round that captivated observers with the students’ exceptional brilliance.

The overall winner, Etiyeyemonu Esther of Senior Model College, Igbokuta, Imota, will ascend to the ceremonial role of One-Day Governor. She was joined on the podium by Awoyemi Dorcas of Ikosi Senior Secondary School and Salami Jumai Olaide of Angus Memorial Senior High School, who emerged as first and second runners-up, respectively. Their collective success highlights the high standards of instruction and student dedication prevalent within Education District II.
The significance of the competition was amplified by the goodwill message from Nigeria’s First Lady and initiator of the concept, Her Excellency, Distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON. Represented by Barr. (Mrs.) Grace Giwa, the First Lady lauded the students' courage, passion, and discipline, expressing delight that the Spelling Bee continues to build exceptional leaders. She underscored her belief that investing in education is fundamentally an investment in the nation’s collective future.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Ali-Balogun, echoed this sentiment, confidently affirming that "Our students are the best." He referenced recent international successes, including the state’s students representing Nigeria in Singapore, as evidence of the high standards set by Lagos public schools. Commissioner Ali-Balogun further urged the winners to sustain their excellence and strive for even greater achievements..

The competition was hailed by other dignitaries, including the Head of Service and various Tutors-General, as a vital platform for nurturing resilience, confidence, and intellectual curiosity. The newly crowned One-Day Governor, Etiyeyemonu Esther, described her victory as a dream realized and a testament to hard work, pledging to use her platform to inspire other students, particularly young girls, to pursue excellence and believe in their untapped potential.
