Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje : The Rural Catalyst

Dr. Nurudeen Yekinni Agbaje (often known by the nickname "Nero") serves as the Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development in Lagos State. An Ikorodu-born administrator and grassroots politician, Dr. Agbaje has become a pivotal figure in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration. His role is focused on ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach the farthest corners of the state, effectively bridging the gap between the urban centers and rural communities.

Under his leadership, the Office of Rural Development has spearheaded numerous "bottom-up" initiatives. One of his primary focuses has been rural electrification and infrastructure, involving the distribution of high-capacity transformers and the installation of solar-powered streetlights in underserved areas. These projects are designed to improve security and stimulate local economies by extending business hours and improving the quality of life for rural dwellers.

​Dr. Agbaje is also a strong advocate for youth and agricultural empowerment. Through the Centre for Rural Development (CERUD), he has overseen training programs in modern farming techniques and digital skills like blogging and online entrepreneurship. By providing tools such as fish tanks, smoking kilns, and modern farming equipment, his office aims to make rural life more sustainable and reduce the pressure of rural-urban migration.

​A hallmark of his tenure is the institutionalization of community engagement. Dr. Agbaje maintains a close working relationship with over 5,000 Community Development Associations (CDAs) across Lagos. He frequently organizes leadership training for these groups, encouraging them to take "ownership" of government projects in their localities to ensure long-term sustainability and protection against vandalism..

Recognized as a "silent engine" of the administration, Dr. Agbaje’s work is characterized by technical precision and a people-first approach. His efforts have earned him various accolades, including the "Community Champion Award." His career reflects a commitment to the "THEMES+" agenda of the state government, specifically focusing on social inclusion and ensuring that no resident is left behind regardless of their geographical location.
