The Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN), Lagos State Chapter, recently held its landmark Mega Conference and Executive Handing-Over Ceremony. Hosted at the Wesley School for the Hearing Impaired in Surulere, the event brought together key players in the disability inclusion sector. The conference served as both a reflective look at the association's past achievements and a forward-looking strategy session to enhance sign language interpretation in the state.

A significant highlight of the day was the formal transition of power to a new Executive Committee. Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, General Manager of the Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA), delivered a charge to the new leaders, urging them to prioritize impact and professionalism. She reaffirmed that LASODA remains a steadfast partner to ASLIN, working tirelessly to ensure that the Deaf community has equal access to information and opportunities within the state.
In his remarks, the Chairman of ASLIN Lagos, Mr. Olubowale Sodeinde, commended the outgoing executives for their resilience and commitment to the profession. He stressed that the practice of sign language interpretation is a bridge to inclusion, and as such, requires constant capacity building and collaboration. Mr. Sodeinde highlighted that the association’s strength lies in its ability to advocate for the rights of the Deaf community through high-quality communication services.
The conference also provided a platform for members of the Deaf community and sign language interpreters to network and share best practices. Discussions focused on the need for more standardized training and the integration of sign language into public and private sectors. This dialogue is crucial for creating a Lagos that is truly accessible to all, regardless of their physical abilities or communication needs.

As the event concluded, a shared commitment was established among all stakeholders to deepen partnerships that advance inclusive communication. The new executive committee took their oaths with a promise to elevate the association to new heights. Through these efforts, ASLIN Lagos continues to play a pivotal role in the state's journey toward a more equitable and inclusive society for persons with disabilities.
