The Lagos State Government has officially announced the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, which was originally scheduled to take place on December 31, 2025. The decision was made public through a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile. The cancellation marks a shift in the state's traditional end-of-year celebrations, moving away from public festivities toward a more somber and reflective approach.

In place of the "Countdown 2026" musical concerts and parties, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed residents of the state to dedicate the final hours of the year to personal and collective prayers. The Governor emphasized the importance of spiritual reflection, urging Lagosians to seek divine guidance for the nation, the state, and its people as they prepare to enter the new year.
The Governor’s directive focuses on a prayerful transition, with a specific call for residents to petition for "continued prosperity, leadership, peace, productivity, and general well-being." This move suggests a strategic pause to align the state's collective spirit with its developmental goals, emphasizing harmony and peace across all local communities and divisions of the state.
Extending his New Year greetings, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed strong optimism for the coming year, noting that 2026 holds great promise for both Lagos and Nigeria at large. He assured residents that the government remains undeterred by the current challenges and is prepared to work "twice as hard" to fulfill its promises and deliver essential services to every citizen in the new year.

The announcement concluded with a message of hope and a call for unity. The Governor thanked the residents for their resilience throughout 2025 and reaffirmed his administration's dedication to making 2026 a landmark year for progress. Residents are encouraged to celebrate the crossover in their respective homes and places of worship, maintaining the spirit of peace and brotherly love.
