The Serenity of Tarkwa Bay Beach: How to Plan a Perfect Island Escape

Tarkwa Bay Beach is perhaps Lagos’ best-kept secret a sheltered, man-made harbor accessible only by water. Unlike the chaotic, high-volume energy of public beaches like Elegushi, Tarkwa Bay offers a bohemian, laid-back vibe that appeals to surfers, budget travelers, and those simply seeking a momentary divorce from the city’s noise

Your escape begins at the water’s edge. To reach the island, you must board a boat from one of the major jetties: Fiki Marina (under the Falomo Bridge), Tarzan Jetty in Victoria Island, or the CMS Ferry Terminal.

The 15-to-20-minute boat ride is a scenic experience in itself. As the boat speeds away from the Lagos skyline, you pass massive cargo ships and the towering cranes of the Apapa Port—a stark, industrial contrast to the palm-fringed horizon of the bay that awaits you.

Cost: Public boats range from ₦1,500 to ₦3,000 per person.

Private Charter: For a more curated experience, private speedboats or yachts can be rented for groups, starting from ₦150,000 upwards.

Once you disembark, the island’s gentle rhythm takes over. Because the bay is protected by a harbor wall, the water is significantly calmer than at other Atlantic-facing beaches.

Surfing for Beginners: Tarkwa Bay is the epicenter of Nigeria’s budding surf culture. The waves are manageable, and local instructors offer lessons and board rentals.

Water Sports: Jet skiing and hoverboarding are popular for those with a need for speed.

Beachside Lounging: You can rent a tent and chairs for a small fee (~₦2,000–₦5,000) and enjoy freshly grilled fish or coconut water sold by local vendors.

While many visit for a day trip, staying overnight allows you to experience the "magic hour" when the day-trippers leave and the island settles into a quiet hush.

  • Accommodations: Options range from the rustic charm of local cabins to the more upscale Tarkwa Bay Beach Resort or private beach houses like JayBee Beach Camp.

  • Essential Checklist: Bring sunscreen, towels, a power bank (electricity can be spotty), and your own drinks if you have specific preferences, though local bars are plentiful.
