Spend enough time in Lagos and you will realise that the traffic is not the only thing testing your patience. The people you meet can be just as memorable. From the person who can turn a five-minute conversation into a business opportunity to the stranger who suddenly becomes your closest ally when you are trying to navigate a complicated bus route, Lagosians have a certain way of making everyday life interesting.

Here are some of the different types of people you are likely to meet in Lagos.

1. The Always-Busy Lagosian

Ask this person how they are doing and the answer is almost guaranteed to be, “I’m busy.”

They are always somewhere. Heading to work. Coming from work. Going for a meeting. Attending another meeting. Looking for a client. Chasing a payment.

Even when they are sitting down, their phone is ringing.

For this person, resting can feel like wasting time. Lagos has taught them that if you slow down for too long, someone else might take the opportunity you were waiting for.

2. The Hustler Who Has Five Businesses

You met them selling clothes last month.

Now they sell perfumes.

Next week, they might introduce you to their food business.

And if you tell them your 30-minute journey took two hours, they will probably say:

“That one is still manageable.”

5. The Lagos Fashionista

There is a special category of Lagosian who refuses to let traffic, heat or distance interfere with looking good.

They will dress beautifully to attend an event three hours away, even though they know they may spend half of the journey sweating in traffic.

Their Instagram pictures will suggest that Lagos is a peaceful, glamorous city.

Their camera roll knows the truth.

This person has decided that life is too short for unnecessary stress.

They are looking for beautiful restaurants, weekend getaways, rooftop lounges, staycations and aesthetically pleasing cafés.

This person can turn almost anything into content.

A delayed flight becomes a story.

A restaurant becomes a review.

A breakup becomes a podcast episode.

A strange encounter on the road becomes a TikTok.

They are always looking for the angle, the hook and the camera-friendly moment.

Sometimes you wonder whether they are actually experiencing Lagos or documenting it.

But somewhere between the traffic, the noise, the opportunities, the disappointments and the endless hustle, you begin to understand something about Lagos.

The city is shaped by its people.

And its people are remarkably different.

Perhaps that is why Lagos never really gets boring.
