Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, accompanied President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the National Assembly for the formal presentation of the 2026 Federal Budget. The high-profile event saw the President addressing a joint session of the legislature, where he outlined the fiscal roadmap and strategic vision of his administration for the coming year. Governor Sanwo-Olu’s presence underscored the strong synergy between the sub-national and federal governments in driving national development.

In a comprehensive address, His Excellency President Tinubu identified defense and national security as the cornerstone of the 2026 budget. The President emphasized that securing the nation remains the administration’s primary responsibility, as it provides the necessary foundation for all other developmental goals to thrive. The budget proposal includes significant allocations for modernizing security architecture and enhancing the capacity of the armed forces to combat emerging threats across the federation.

Beyond security, the 2026 budget places a heavy premium on human capital development and the urgent need for food security. The President noted that investing in the Nigerian people through education, healthcare, and skill acquisition is vital for long-term prosperity. Furthermore, the administration plans to implement aggressive agricultural policies to stabilize food prices and ensure that every Nigerian has access to affordable and nutritious food, tackling the rising cost of living head-on.

Infrastructure also remains a pivotal pillar of the federal government’s plan, with a commitment to the completion of ongoing projects. President Tinubu assured the National Assembly that the 2026 budget is designed to prevent the abandonment of critical works, focusing instead on finishing highways, rail lines, and power projects that facilitate ease of doing business. This "finish-what-we-started" approach is intended to provide immediate economic relief and long-term structural benefits.

the President described the 2026 budget as a blueprint for economic responsibility and sustainable growth. He stated that the fiscal policies contained within are aimed at improving the overall welfare of Nigerians and building a more resilient economy. As the National Assembly begins its deliberations, the administration remains optimistic that the proposed budget will usher in a new era of stability and progress for the entire country.
