Located in the heart of Ikeja, the Otigba Computer Village is more than just a marketplace; it is a global phenomenon. Widely recognized as the largest ICT hub in Africa, this sprawling commercial ecosystem serves as the primary nerve center for technology trade and services across West Africa. What began in the late 1990s as a modest collection of shops on Otigba Street has exploded into a multi-billion dollar juggernaut, housing over 3,500 registered companies and thousands of independent entrepreneurs.

The economic footprint of Computer Village is staggering. It is estimated to generate between $1.5 billion and $2 billion in annual revenue, with daily turnovers often exceeding ₦1.5 billion. This immense volume of trade isn't limited to hardware sales; it encompasses a massive "grey market" and a sophisticated service economy. From the latest flagship smartphones and high-end enterprise servers to the tiniest semiconductor components, if a piece of technology exists, it can likely be found or procured within these few square kilometers.
What truly distinguishes Otigba is its status as a "Solution Hub." It is home to an incredible density of highly skilled technicians and self-taught engineers who possess the rare ability to "resurrect" seemingly dead electronics. This culture of repair and refurbishment is a vital component of Nigeria’s circular economy, extending the life of devices and making technology accessible to those who cannot afford brand-new gadgets. This concentration of technical talent has earned the area the nickname "The Silicon Valley of West Africa."
Despite its lack of formal planned infrastructure, the market operates with a high degree of organization under the Computer and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (CAPDAN). The sheer foot traffic is immense, with some estimates suggesting that over one million people pass through the market daily. This human density creates a perfect competition environment where prices are highly aggressive, attracting retail buyers and wholesale merchants from neighboring countries like Ghana, Togo, and Benin Republic.

However, the future of Otigba is currently at a crossroads. Due to its organic, unplanned growth, the market faces significant challenges regarding congestion, security, and overstretched utilities. In response, the Lagos State Government has long-discussed plans to relocate the hub to a purpose-built ICT Park in Katangowa. While relocation aims to provide a more structured environment with modern facilities, the "magic" of Otigba remains in its current grit and grassroots innovation a testament to the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Lagos.
