The Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), has taken a decisive step toward improving community health with the implementation of the “Ounje Lo Re Awo” (Food and Nutrition) Programme. Held at the Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, the event served as a critical intervention to promote healthy living and balanced nutrition. The programme successfully mobilized women, community leaders, and nutrition experts for an intensive day of interactive learning.

Speaking at the event, the Honourable Commissioner for WAPA, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, emphasized that the initiative is a practical manifestation of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda. She noted that the ministry is intentionally targeting all five administrative divisions of the state to ensure that no community is left behind in the quest for better health outcomes. The Commissioner highlighted that proper nutrition is the foundation of family wellbeing and overall societal productivity.

During the technical segment, renowned nutritionist Mr. Olusola Malomo delivered a compelling talk on the dangers of modern dietary habits. He specifically cautioned participants against the excessive consumption of sugar, junk food, and the hazardous practice of reusing vegetable oils. By linking these poor habits to the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, the programme provided residents with the scientific knowledge needed to make informed and life-saving dietary choices.

The local leadership, represented by the Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Jimoh Olawale Saliu, and GAC Chairman, Hon. Tunde Balogun, lauded the state’s people-centered approach. They described the programme as a timely response to the everyday challenges faced by families in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort between the state and local government levels to ensure that social welfare programmes have a direct impact at the grassroots level.

The event concluded with a practical demonstration of the state's support through the distribution of healthy food packs to participants. These packs, containing essential items such as chicken, beans, rice, and vegetable oil, were designed to provide immediate nutritional relief while reinforcing the lessons taught during the session. This holistic approach ensures that participants leave not only with knowledge but also with the resources to begin their journey toward a healthier lifestyle.
