Lagos is set to welcome football legends, entertainment personalities and sports fans for a football carnival that promises to combine sporting nostalgia with music, celebrity competition and charity.

The Legends Football Game Celebrity Football Carnival will take place on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan, Lagos. The event is organised by Bet9ja in collaboration with Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX).

According to reports published by The Guardian and THISDAY, the programme will begin at noon and feature a Legends Football Game, a celebrity five-a-side competition, music and other entertainment activities.

Football legends take centre stage

Former Super Eagles players Mutiu Adepoju, Victor Ikpeba, Alloy Agu and Garba Lawal have been announced for coaching roles during the event.

The carnival will also celebrate Nigeria’s celebrated football generation, particularly the teams associated with the country’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and the 1996 Olympic football gold medal.

For older football fans, the gathering offers an opportunity to revisit a memorable period in Nigerian football history, while younger supporters can learn more about the players who helped shape the country’s sporting reputation.

Where entertainment meets charity

Beyond the main football match, the event will feature a celebrity five-a-side competition involving personalities from Nigeria’s entertainment and creative industries.

The winning team’s prize money will be donated to a charitable foundation selected by its captain, giving the competition a charitable dimension beyond the excitement on the pitch.

The organisers have also promised music and fan engagement activities, bringing together different audiences through sport and entertainment.

What the event means for Lagos

Lagos has long attracted major sporting and entertainment events. Programmes that combine both industries can create opportunities for vendors, hospitality businesses, transport operators and other local service providers.

However, the wider economic benefits will depend on attendance, visitor spending and how effectively the event connects local businesses with its audience.

The carnival also highlights the potential for sporting heritage to become part of Lagos’s wider cultural and entertainment offering.

As the city prepares for another busy festive season, the event provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of Nigerian football legends while connecting sports with contemporary entertainment.
