Few Nigerian artists have reinvented themselves as successfully as Adekunle Gold. Born Adekunle Almoruf Kosoko on 28 January 1987 in Lagos State, his journey reflects the city's culture of creativity, resilience and constant evolution.
Long before becoming one of Afrobeats' most respected voices, Adekunle Gold was a creative designer. He earned a Higher National Diploma in Arts and Design from Lagos State Polytechnic and built a reputation as a talented graphic artist, even designing the official logo for YBNL Nation before joining the label as a recording artist.
His breakthrough came in 2014 with "Sade," a highlife-inspired reimagining of One Direction's Story of My Life. The song became an instant hit, introducing a refreshing sound that blended traditional Nigerian influences with contemporary music. The success of "Sade" opened the door to his debut album, Gold, released in 2016. The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard World Albums Chart, confirming his arrival on the international stage.

Rather than remain in one musical lane, Adekunle Gold continued to evolve. Albums such as Afro Pop Vol. 1, Catch Me If You Can, Tequila Ever After, and Fuji showcased his ability to experiment while maintaining his signature storytelling and soulful sound. His creativity earned him a deal with Def Jam Recordings, further expanding his global reach.
Away from the studio, Adekunle Gold has become a powerful voice for health advocacy. In 2022, he publicly shared his lifelong battle with sickle cell disease, revealing that the experience inspired his hit song "5 Star." Through the Adekunle Gold Foundation, he continues to promote awareness, encourage conversations around the condition and support affected communities. In 2025, New York University announced a collaboration with him focused on sickle cell disease and mental health awareness.
His personal life has also captured public admiration. Adekunle Gold married fellow Nigerian singer Simi in 2019 after several years of dating, and together they have become one of Nigeria's most celebrated celebrity couples. They welcomed their daughter, Deja, in 2020.
From church choir member and graphic designer to award-winning singer, songwriter and global ambassador for health awareness, Adekunle Gold represents the limitless possibilities that Lagos inspires. His career proves that talent, when matched with discipline, originality and a willingness to grow, can transform local dreams into international success.
For Lagos, Adekunle Gold is more than a music star. He is a symbol of the city's creative energy, an artist whose story continues to inspire a new generation to embrace their craft, honour their roots and pursue excellence on the world stage.
